| Note: | The Krueger Brewery enjoyed a long history in Newark, New Jersey. Gottfried Krueger came from his native Germany in 1856 and worked at his uncle's Newark brewery. In 1865, Krueger purchased the brewery with a partner. When the partner died ten years later, Krueger became the brewery's sole owner. During National Prohibition (1920-1933), the brewery produced non-alcoholic beverages. In 1933, upon the Repeal of Prohibition, the Krueger brewery returned to the production of beer. By 1952, the Newark brewery was producing about 1 million barrels of beer per year. But, as the 1950s wore on, it became increasingly difficult for regional brewers like Krueger to compete. The brewery finally closed in 1961. |
