This is one of Will Anderson's earliest beer books, and one of his best. It really was a pioneer in beer history publications. There is a heavy emphasis on beer memorabilia, with hundreds of photos -- many in full color. Lots of good history, too. As with all of Anderson's books, The Beer Book is packed with photos which really pay off the richness of brewing history in America.

Long before Coke, there was beer. From the time of the first settlement at Jamestown, Americans have enjoyed home and commercially-brewed ale and other lively forms of fermented malt. Will Anderson's The Beer Book is an affectionate, knowledgeable and colorful tribute to American breweries, and their one-thousand-and-one collectibles.
Trays, bottles, ads, cans, glasses and mugs, calendars, cards, coasters, tap knobs, signs and posters, labels, openers, brewery plant pictures - all are here in great array, in 32 full-color photographs and several hundred black and white shots. They fully illustrate the imaginative art of beer advertising and packaging, especially as practiced in the late 1800's and early 1900's by breweries in almost every city and town in the country.
The brewery was a "local" establishment, and often a very imposing one of red brick and decorative turrets. Even today, such well-known brands as Coors, Lucky Lager, Pearl and Schaefer are not distributed nationally. San Franciscans take pride in their Anchor Steam; Horseshoe Curve is found only in Altoona. To the dwindling number of hometown breweries, however, must be added the thousands (in 1873, 4131 in all) which fell victim to the curse of Prohibition or the even more deadly onslaught of big business - Old Devonshire (Bartels), Irish Cream Ale (Beverwyck), Fidelio (H. Koehler & Co.), Old Georgetown (Christian Heurich), Old Topper Lager (Standard-Rochester).
Every reader of The Beer Book will find the chromolithograph advertising art of the turn-of-the-century amusing and highly decorative; bottle collectors will admire the many well-photographed pictures of containers dating back to the early 1800's. Even the humble can - flat-top and spout-top - will emerge as a nostalgic work of art.
For the thousands of collectors of breweriana, The Beer Book is indispensable. For the uninitiated, it comprises an informal, colorful introduction to an important chapter in American social and commercial history.
